Christians and The DaVinci Code?
By George Barna
|
There are
some indisputable facts in life. Everyone will die. Republicans
and Democrats will never get along.
Poverty will always plague humanity. And Americans love movies.
In 2005, adults
watched an average of 45 movies. The mean was identical for born
again Christians and nominal Christians. And that figure doesn’t
even include the movie clips that they were shown while the faithful
were in church! Currently, two-thirds of all Protestant churches
have big-screen projection capabilities. In congregations that
use movie clips for teaching purposes, 77% of congregants contend
that those visual media are helpful in their spiritual development.
Movies have become the benign educator of choice in our media-happy
society.
Coming in
May of this year to a theater near everyone will be the big screen
interpretation of the mega-selling novel, The
DaVinci Code. This spellbinding
work of fiction has captivated the minds of more than 30 million
readers. The forthcoming film, featuring a huge budget and some
of the best talent Hollywood has to offer, promises to intrigue
audiences while challenging people’s perceptions about the Christian
faith.
The book makes
many claims that are at odds with Christian teachings. Author
Dan Brown’s engaging conspiracy fantasy has Jesus Christ married
to Mary Magdalene and the father of children; the Bible
being doctored by church leaders in 325 A.D. in order to control
the Roman Empire and oppress women; claims that the idea of Jesus’
divinity was fabricated for political reasons; and asserts the
Roman Catholic Church has conspired for centuries to keep the
documentation of such religious scandals a secret.
Many followers
of Christ fear that the movie, which will be even more accessible
to the public at-large than the book, will distort people’s theological
perceptions. This fear is well-founded. Americans already possess
an unorthodox profile of religious beliefs, indiscriminately blending
biblical and cultural views.

PRC Walk4Life
May 13th at Creve Coeur Park
By Jim Day
|
The Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) is encouraging
everyone who values the sanctity of human life to “Put their
feet to their Faith” by participating
in their annual Walk4Life fundraising event to be held May
13 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Creve Coeur Park in Creve Coeur,
MO.
After the
success of the 2005 Walk4Life campaign, they’re ramping
up this year’s event in hopes of surpassing last year’s
number of participants and amount raised. Last year marked
the largest turnout of walkers and funds raised in PRC’s 23 year history. Over 600 sponsored walkers raised approximately
$100,000.
In 2006,
the PRC hopes to see 1,000 sponsored walkers each raising
$250 or more. (Every walker that raises $250 or more will
receive a free special edition Walk4Life t-shirt.)
PRC
Expands Walk Events
In order to reach their fundraising goal and make
the Walk4Life an even more enjoyable and exciting event,
they’ve added more events to the Walk and extended the hours.
They’ve also announced the addition of their first annual
Run4Life. Designed for more active participants, the 6K
(non competitive) run will begin at 8:30 a.m. While you
can come and walk at any time during the day, PRC is encouraging
all that can to come and walk at 10 a.m. The Walk will follow
the Run at 10 a.m. What a sight that will be to see 1,000;
1,200; 1,500 or more walkers proclaiming the sanctity of
human life by walking together through Creve Coeur Park.
Walk participants
will be able to enjoy musical entertainment from 10 to 2,
provided by the Metro Christian Worship Center Praise and
Worship Team. PRC has also announced that young walkers
and walker want-to-bes will enjoy
a greater variety of children’s activities this year sponsored
by Southside Hills Assembly of God Church. Food and refreshments
will again be served by the culinary wizards of First Evangelical
Free Church who have vowed to outdo themselves this year.
