Everyday Missionaries Share the Good News!

My husband, Chad, is one of the best
everyday missionaries I know. Recently while at my sisters for a birthday
party, my niece’s husband found a quiet corner and asked him to explain more
about the Lord. For the first time in his life this man is thinking about what
happens after death. He thought God would allow him into heaven if he was good
enough. My husband explained that it isn’t what we do, but what Jesus Christ
has already done for us. He explained that none of us could work our way to
heaven. Chad then extended an invitation
to join him on an outing to our farm near Bowling Green, Missouri. The trip gave them
additional time to talk about critical spiritual issues.
But, why
did my niece’s husband feel comfortable enough to ask my husband such an
important question? The answer lies in the fact that Chad
had already built a trusting relationship. Building a relationship is an important
beginning. And, it doesn’t have to take a long time. Relationships can be built
as we visit with those sitting next to us on an airplane, talk to those in
stores and restaurants we frequent, or model our faith to our extended family!
As we build relationships, God will open doors of opportunities to share our faith!
All Christians are
everyday missionaries! As Christ ambassadors (2 Cor. 5:20) we model and speak of our faith in the home,
church, school, on the job, and in the community. Parents are everyday
missionaries as they teach their children to know and love Jesus! Grandparents
are everyday missionaries as they pray for their children and grandchildren,
assist them, and communicate God’s love. Many times it’s the grandparents who
take grandchildren to Sunday School and church and
tell them about their Savior. Sunday School, Vacation
Bible School
teachers, and youth leaders are also everyday missionaries. Many children who
attend Sunday School and Vacation
Bible School
never heard about Jesus in their homes. Teachers in public and Christian
schools can also be everyday missionaries!
Everyday
missionaries know they are unable to live a perfect life so they confess their
sins to the Lord everyday. If we confess
our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us
from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
Everyday missionaries pray before they speak. Ask the
Lord to grant you His wisdom and open doors of opportunities to share God’s
love with those you meet. Pray for God’s wisdom and will to be done (Col. 1:3,9). Be
persistent and fervent in prayer (Col. 4:2-12). Pray for the opportunity to
share Christ and that God would open doors for the message (Col. 4:3). And pray
that the Lord’s message would spread (2 Thess. 3:1).
Everyday missionaries don’t go ahead
of the Holy Spirit. Pray for those who are not Christians, but don’t move ahead
of the Holy Spirit. Wait on the Lord to send you (remember He may send someone
else). Wait for Him to open the door for you to speak (Acts 13:4; Acts 16:6-7;
Acts 16:14; Acts 10:24). He promises to give us
the words we will need (Matt. 10:19-20) in the hour we need
them.
Everyday
missionaries read and study God’s Word. All Scripture is inspired by God
and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in
righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good
work (2 Tim. 3:16, 17).
Sometimes
everyday missionaries don’t feel equipped to share their faith. They need to
become equipped so they can make a defense to everyone who asks. Are you
equipped? If not, prayerfully consider how you can grow in your faith: join a Bible study; study God’s Word on your
own; read daily devotions; and attend a workshop that will help you learn to
share your faith…but sanctify Christ as
Lord in your heart, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks
you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and
reverence (1 Peter 3:15).
Everyday
missionaries share the Good News! Tell those
you meet about the Savior who suffered and died for your sins and theirs!
Tell them of the Savior who suffered and died
for their sins, rose from the dead, and promises eternal life in heaven! What
was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes,
what we beheld and our hands handled, concerning the Word of Life—and the life
was manifested, and we have seen and bear witness and proclaim to you the
eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us…(1 John 1:1, 2).
